When ski touring, your gear needs to strike a balance between protection, mobility, and lightweight performance.

Here’s what to look for in your clothing:

• Prioritize waterproof and windproof shells with excellent breathability (like 3-layer fabrics) to keep you dry without overheating.

• Look for pit zips or thigh vents to dump heat quickly during ascents.
  
• Touring demands movement — articulated knees, gusseted underarms, and stretchy fabrics make a big difference.
  
• Secure, accessible pockets for avalanche transceivers and tools are essential.
  
• Opt for lightweight, packable layers you can add or remove as needed, like synthetic puffies or mid-weight fleeces.
  
• Built-in gaiters, powder skirts, and helmet-compatible hoods protect against snow intrusion.

Layering is key to staying comfortable all day — especially when conditions shift from stormy to sunny. Here’s a solid system to follow:

• Start with a moisture-wicking, quick-drying base layer — merino wool or synthetic. Avoid cotton at all costs, it holds sweat and gets cold fast.
  
• Add an insulating mid-layer, like a fleece or synthetic puffy. On colder days, a thicker mid-layer adds warmth without bulk.
  
• Finish with a waterproof, breathable shell to protect from wind, snow, and wet chairlifts. Bonus points for ventilation zips and adjustable cuffs.
  
• On deep winter days, stash a lightweight down or synthetic jacket in your pack. You’ll thank yourself on lunch breaks or summit stops.

• Prioritizes lightness, breathability, and packability. Think minimal insulation, generous venting, and stretch for long climbs and transitions.

• Check the breathability rating (measured in g/m²/24h). Anything above 10,000g is decent, but 20,000g+ is ideal for high-output activities like touring.
  
• Premium shells use 3-layer fabrics that combine durability, waterproofing, and high breathability in one — they also last longer.
  
• Even the best fabrics need backup. Look for underarm vents, thigh zips, or mesh-lined pockets to dump heat fast.
  
• Fully insulated gear often traps more heat. A breathable shell with smart layering gives you way more control.
  
• A good fit helps with airflow too — snug but not tight, with articulated joints for movement.
